Showing a similar appreciation for the ridiculous in the job, Condoleezza Rice recounts how later during the administration,a statue was going to be given to President Bush 41 by then-Soviet Foreign Minister Shevardnadze and it was of good conquering evil and it was St. George slaying an SS20 (intercontinental ballistic missile). And we thought that the thing—we were going to have a ceremony—and we thought that it was maybe this big (she extends her hands a few feet apart) and so it was going to be an Oval Office ceremony. This is something that Shevardnadze had personally gotten his friend to do, a personal commission, and about an hour before, I get a call and the people say, Dr. Rice, I think you better come down here. And the thing is six feet tall, it’s enormous. And all of a sudden I have to arrange a new ceremony, and find, as we finished with it Brent turns to me and says, “Now find something to do with it.” So, to me, it says what’s it’s like to be on the NSC staff. One day you’re sitting meeting with Boris Yeltsin and the president, and it’s kind of the height of what you thought you would be doing when you went to graduate school. And the next moment you’re trying to find a place for a six-foot statue that doesn’t have a home.24
